Theriogenology and Developments in Epidemiology: Future Opportunities? (Published as Theriogenology 66(3):526-33, 2006)

چکیده
The concepts and methods of the branches of epidemiology, particularly clinical epidemiology, likely have much to offer the discipline of theriogenology. As with theriogenology, epidemiologic methods evolve when technological innovation enables new approaches to old problems. The recent emergence from clinical epidemiology of the evidence-based medicine paradigm in human medicine and the associated developments of systematic reviews and meta-analysis may present new opportunities for collaboration between the two disciplines.

Canine pyometra.
Pyometra, literally meaning pus in the uterus, is a common disease entity of intact bitches. Similar conditions occur, including hydrometra and mucometra [De Bosschere H, Ducatelle R, Vermeirsch H, Van Den Broeck W, Coryn M. Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex in the bitch: should the two entities be disconnected? Theriogenology 2001;55:1509-19]. The exact etiology is unknown; howev...
متن کاملImproving cryopreservation systems.
Cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos is a crucial step for widespread practical application of other techniques in domestic animal embryology. However, in contrast to the rapid development of procedures in the eighties and early nineties of the last century, new advancements with profound practical consequences have only been recently achieved. As a result of a long and controversial develop...
متن کاملEffect of Administration of an Opioid Antagonist (Naloxane) to Treat Ovarian Cysts in Dairy Cows
The role of stress in the pathogenesis of ovarian cysts is believed to be mediated by the discharge of endogenous cortisol, which inhibits LH release. Endogenous opioid peptides are involved in many responses to stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of epidural administration of Naloxone (NX) on cystic regression and follicle development leading to normal oestrus ...
متن کاملImpact of in vitro fertilization by fresh and frozen semen on developmental competence and cryotolerance of buffalo embryos
Production of high quality embryos in vitro needs an efficient in vitro fertilization (IVF). Seminal origin is one of the important factors that affects the success of in vitro embryo production. So our goal was to determine the effect of using fresh and frozen semen in fertilization on developmental competence and cryo-survival of buffalo embryos. Buffalo oocytes wer...
متن کاملThe role of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) in differentiation of bovine spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs)
The receptors 1 and 2 of fibroblast growth factor (FGFR1 and FGFR2, respectively) have been observed in all types of testicular cells. Culture on extracellular matrix (ECM) has been observed to lead to initiation of differentiation in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). The present study was carried out to investigate whether FGFR1 and FGFR2 play a role in SSCs differentiation. Following isolatio...
